The emphasis at Skin Biology is to design skin and hair products compatible with the renewal systems in the human body. The products are designed by Dr. Loren Pickart who has a BA in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco.
Pickart's entire career focused on the question of why blood from young persons (20-25) supported cells and tissues better blood from older persons (60-80). During this work, he isolated the copper binding tripeptide GHK (Gly-His-Lys) which appeared to be the major reason for the superiority of young blood.
He worked at the University of Minnesota; the Sansum Foundation in Santa Barbara; the University of California, San Francisco, and the Benaroya Institute in Seattle.
In 1985, he started Procyte Corporation to develop products based on his research. Procyte was sold but still exists as Procyte as a division in another company.
Skin Biology founded as his second company and has continued the research and product devopment. Work by Pickart and about 80 other laboratories has found GHK to possess a plethora of cellular and tissue actions. GHK has now been tested on all all 22,277 human genes and the staff at Skin Biology is currently analysing the gene data for potential therapeutic uses.
Pickart is a member of the Wound Healing Society, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, the American Chemical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His recent presentations include the Wound Healing Society (2008, 2009, 2011) and publications Biomaterials (2008), the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine Therapeutics Book (2009), the SOFW Journal 2010, Peelings (in Russian) (2010), Kosmetik International (in Russian) (2010); the Reverse Skin Aging (book) 2nd Edition 2011, the Journal of Aging Research & Clinical Practice (2012), Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity (2012).
